MUMBAI: Films released in May 2025 grossed Rs. 1,136 Crores at the domestic box office, making it the second-best month of the year, after February. Ormax has published the May 2025 edition of The India Box Office Report. It tracks the performance of the various films released every month at the Indian (domestic) box office. Monthly reports are published on its site in the third week of the following month.
Other findings include:
– The cumulative box office for Jan-May releases in 2025 stands at Rs. 4,812 Crores, which is 27% higher compared to the same period in 2024
– ‘Raid 2’ emerged as the top film of the month, grossing over Rs. 200 Crores, followed by Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which grossed over Rs. 115 Crores. Together they accounted for 28% of the month’s box office collections.
– May 2025 has turned out to be the strongest month for Hollywood in India since July 2023
‘Raid 2’ starring Ajay Devgn is now the second-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2025 behind ‘Chhaava’.
With three Hollywood films in this month’s Top 10 highest-grossing films, i.e., ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’, ‘Final Destination Bloodlines’ and ‘Thunderbolts’, May 2025 has turned out to be a strongest month for Hollywood in India since July 2023 (the Oppenheimer-Barbie month), grossing Rs. 262 Crores.
The top 10 list of the highest-grossing films of 2025 so far has four Hindi films, and two each from Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam languages.
For language share calculation, language-wise box office of films releasing in multiple languages is assigned to the corresponding language. However, for Hollywood, the data for all languages is reported under the language head ‘Hollywood’.
The strong box office performance of Hollywood films in May has boosted Hollywood’s share from 4% to 8%, brining it to a similar level as last year.
Different language industries follow different reporting conventions (Gross, Nett or Share). We have used Gross Box Office as the unified measure for this report. For films releasing in multiple languages, collections are added up across languages to arrive at the film’s Gross Box Office at an all-India level.
Some films may be running in theatres at the time of publishing this report every month. For these films, Gross Box Office is estimated based on the latest trends available. Hence, it is normal that some numbers may be updated in the following month’s report, once actual collections have been estimated.
Numbers for a film are assigned to the month of its release, even if the business is spread over two or more months. For example, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ released on June 27, 2024, and a sizeable component of the film’s business was registered in July 2024. However, in the analysis, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’s entire box office has been credited to the month of June.
